Protein metabolism in a model of premature ovarian failure, Turner syndrome, and the impact of hormone replacement therapy

Gravholt Claus H , Riis Anne-Lene , Christiansen Jens Sandahl

Background: Several studies have documented an altered body composition in Turner syndrome (TS), a model of premature ovarian failure. Body fat is increased and muscle mass is decreased. The ovarian failure necessitates substitution with female hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for a number of years, and HRT induces favourable changes in body composition with a decrease in body fat and an increase in fat free mass. It is unknown how HRT affects protein metabolism.<p class=...

Background: Vitamin D deficiency has been proposed to play a role in development and course of GravesÂ’ disease (GD). Muscle weakness and fatigue are shared features of GD and vitamin D deficiency. We aimed to investigate whether vitamin D supplementation would improve restoration of muscle performance and thyroid-related quality of life (QoL) in GD.Methods: In a double-blinded clinical trial, hyperthyroid patients with a first time diagnosis of GD w...

Effect of vitamin D supplementation on cardiovascular indices in Graves’ disease. A randomized clinical trial

Grove-Laugesen Diana , Malmstroem Sofie , Ebbehoj Eva , Riis Anne Lene , Watt Torquil , Hansen Klavs Wurgler , Rejnmark Lars

Background: Risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality is increased in GravesÂ’ disease (GD) even years after initial diagnosis and treatment. The mechanisms are incompletely understood. Vitamin D insufficiency is associated with an increased risk of CVD and has been reported to occur frequently in GD. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) and blood pressure (BP) are important predictors of CVD. We performed a clinical trial, testing whether vitamin D supplementation affects P...

Context: An interaction between gut-derived ghrelin, which is implicated in the regulation of short- and long-term energy balance, and thyroid function has previously been reported in patients with hyperthyroidism, in whom ghrelin levels are reversibly suppressed. In the present study, we measured total serum ghrelin levels and pertinent metabolic indices in hypothyroid patients before end after L-thyroxin replacement.Patients and methods:...
